Health insurance options explained in plain language

Choosing a health plan means comparing networks, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs. We'll help you understand the options available to you.

What is health insurance?

Health insurance helps pay for medical care, from doctor visits and prescriptions to hospital stays. Plans differ in their provider networks, premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket maximums.

Individuals and families may shop for coverage during Open Enrollment or after a qualifying life event, such as losing other coverage, moving, or having a baby. Small businesses may also offer group plans to employees.

Common coverage options

Availability and terms vary by insurance company and state. An agent can explain what applies to you.

Individual and family plans
Coverage for people who don't get insurance through an employer, including self-employed individuals.
Small group plans
Health benefits a small business can offer to its employees, subject to eligibility and participation rules.
Dental and vision
Standalone plans that may help with routine dental and eye care costs.
Supplemental coverage
Policies such as accident or hospital indemnity that may pay benefits alongside a primary health plan.

Health Insurance questions

When can I enroll in a health plan?

Individual plans can generally be purchased during the annual Open Enrollment period or within a Special Enrollment Period after a qualifying life event.

What's an out-of-pocket maximum?

It's the most you'd pay for covered, in-network services in a plan year. After you reach it, the plan generally pays 100% of covered in-network costs for the rest of the year.

Do I need to share medical history in the quote form?

No. Our form only asks for general household information. Please don't include medical details.
